Gem Stone Geometry
I would like to introduce new word call gemstone geometry. Ohh............ Now I know you are thinking what is he talking about??? Do you know as a jeweler you are mistaken either omitted or no know. Ok I will give an explanation what is gemstone geometry. It means "Proportion of the gem stone". So my job is now on giving some tips and explanation about how to choose gem stones and how to fix geometry for your fabulous jewelry .I hope after you reffer this piece of information your jewelries wont lying in show cases years and years without selling.
Quality of Cut
As a jeweler when you are purchasing gem stones from gem dealers need to be considered three importent characters of the gem stones such as The quality of a cut is govern by the symmetry, proportions and polish or the finish
Symmetry
Symmetry of cut in a gemstone must always be maintained as it ensures a better appearance and hence a better price per carat. If however a good symmetry results in lower yield, the overall price may not justify the added care in cutting. This is very significant for high value gemstone. The major symmetry faults are the unsymmetrical girdle outline, off centered table, off-centered culet, wavy or titled table. The minor symmetry faults are the improperly met facets, extra facets; irregular octagon table facet (see the picture below) .Symmetry is classified s very good, good, fair or poor depending on the difficulty in visibility of faults.
Proportions
The most important parameters to be concerned regarding the proportions are the table size, culet size, girdle thickness, crown angle, pavilion angle, crown high and the pavilion depth. The girdle diameter is the average of maximum and minimum diameter for crowns and width for other shapes. All the other measrements are express as a percentage of girdle diermeter. The high of crown and pavilion in relation to girdle diameter, and crown and the crown and pavilion angle are the controlling facets for brilliance. Too low pavilion result in ‘Fish eye’, a reflection of girdle seen in the table and too deep pavilion cause table appear dark called ‘nail head’. Deep crown cause more fire and less brilliance in colored gemstones. Uneven girdle thickness or too thick or too thin girdle makes a gemstone less attractive and giving hard time for stone setters.
Finish
The ultimate beauty of the gemstone depends on the luster and brilliance which depends on good polish. Gemstones with higher hardness values achieve a better polish. The exactness of shape and the proper arrangement of the facets are also important factors of finish. While maintaining a good symmetry, a stone can have identical defects of either side of table. A presents of polishing lines scratches, unpolished areas, pits, damaged facets edges, damaged polished girdle could affect the finish. Depending on the difficulty of visibility of imperfections under 10x , finish is define as very good, good, fair or poor.
Why Ceylon Natural Gems??????
Everyone is familiar with diamonds but few realize there is a whole world of colored gemstones to explore. For many people, their experience of colored gemstones is limited, usually to the big three; sapphire, rubies and emeralds. It therefore comes as a surprise to people that there are other gems out there that are stunning in their beauty and at a fraction of the price.
Each bespoke gemstone is a small work of art. It takes time to cut and polish when it by comparison usually three to four times higher than the commercial cut gem stones, a beautiful gem and it cannot be rushed. Attention to detail is very important and makes all the difference between mediocre and magnificent.
A hand cut bespoke gem is something that you will enjoy wearing. Every time you look at it you know it's the real deal. It sparkles better, the colors are richer, the shape more pleasing. These are the gems that are handed down the generations and become family heirlooms. You are wearing a one-of-a-kind work of art. These stones make a great investment because they are special, they are unique... they are different from all the rest and represent the best.
About Commercially Cut Stones
As you can see in these pictures below, commercially cut stones are available in the thousands, literally! Sadly there is nothing particularly special or unique about the vast majority of these run-of-the-mill stones. They are cut to standard calibrated sizes in standard designs and shapes.
There is another subtle but important thing to know... they are cut for yield first and foremost, not beauty. It’s all about getting the biggest return the factories can for their buck. Quantity, not quality. Why is this important? Because it turns gemstones into nothing more than a commodity. Getting the most yields from a stone means something has to be sacrificed and this is usually the brilliance and "light return", the color (incorrect orientation reduces the color saturation), shape and design.
In the marketplace, the vast majority of gemstones that one sees in the many jewelery shops have been factory-cut and are in effect "mass-produced". These are generally referred to as "commercially cut" stones. There are very large cutting factories, particularly in Thailand, China and India where gems are literally churned out in their thousands (see pictures below) and they are bought at prices that reflect this fact by jewelery manufacturers.
So, what about the quality of these commercially cut gemstones in comparison with a hand cut bespoke gemstone?Answer is have big differentions such as luster, faceting quality, girdle thickness and polishing .However Many people probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Because the biggest reason is lack of availability of Fine cut gemstone. On the other hand Gem dealers aren’t selling, only selling commercial cut gem stones. So vision of our company selling bespoke gemstone for everyone in the world with reasonable price.
How do you know what to look for in a gemstone? Well, that’s a whole subject in itself. As a guide, I've covered most of the pros and cons in above paragraphs please read those.
